Pattern, Colour and Finish Ideas for Custom Tactical Vests

Pattern and colour can make a custom vest feel personal without relying on another company’s logo or trade dress. The strongest designs usually start with a simple idea, clear contrast, and artwork that remains readable at the size it will print.

Start with the printable panels

Think about the front and back as two separate composition areas. A large pattern may work well across the back, while the front may need more space for a name, number, or smaller mark. Use the live preview to see how the same artwork behaves across both panels.

Build contrast first

  • Choose artwork colours that stand apart from the vest base colour.
  • Keep small text and fine lines away from low-contrast combinations.
  • Test the design at the actual preview size rather than judging it only at full-screen zoom.
  • Use outline, spacing, or a solid panel behind details that might otherwise disappear.

Repeating patterns

Repeating motifs can create a strong all-over look, but scale matters. A pattern that feels balanced across the back may become too busy on the front. Try cropping, enlarging, or using the pattern as a border around a simpler centre element.

Balance the front and back

A common layout is a larger visual statement on the back and a cleaner mark on the front. Another option is to keep the back minimal and place the primary artwork across the front. Both panels can use different ideas, as long as the final piece still feels intentional.

Choose colours with a purpose

  • Pick a dominant colour and one or two supporting colours.
  • Use a neutral base when the artwork contains several colours.
  • Check that names and numbers remain readable against the pattern.
  • Remember that screen colours and printed colours can look different; review the preview carefully.

Artwork files and edges

A transparent PNG usually gives the cleanest edges for a logo or isolated graphic. JPG and SVG files are also accepted. Avoid screenshots, low-resolution copies, and artwork with a background you do not want printed. The Artwork Guide explains file preparation in more detail.

Use only artwork you have permission to use

Create an original pattern, use artwork you own, or obtain permission from the rights holder. Do not copy another brand’s logo, pattern, or trade dress. Review the upload terms in the Terms & Conditions.

Check before ordering

  2. Check the Size & Fit Guide.
  3. Review the ordering timeline if you need the vest for an event.
  4. Approve the final design before placing the order.
